Visit to Talek and Sekenani Girls Secondary on World Environmental Day

Industry News, People

June 4, we began our journey to Narok, with the hopes of having a mentorship programme while meeting; interacting and learning from the students we were to meet.

Upon arrival at Mara Link Hotel within Narok town, we meet with the chairman of people with living with Disabilities (PWDS) Narok County Lukas Parnyumbe Jimmy; during our conversation he gave us a story of a certain family with four kids with disabilities. The family lives in Olooliva village Melelo Location about 45 kilometres from Narok town.

Johana Koech and his wife Ann welcomed us and he gave us an insight to what their life was like.

They have a 15-year-old daughter Naomi Chebet, who got pregnant and has just delivered the other day. The suspect is still at large, despite the case being reported to the police.

We got back to our van and headed to Ewang’an Village, where our lively host Emmanuel Karia was happy to see us again. One team put up at the village, while another team slept at AA lodge.

The next day we managed to visit Talek Girls Secondary, which is a 45 Minutes drive from Ewang’an village, the heavy rains overnight rendered the roads muddy but after the hustle, we got there.

The school management welcomed us and gave us the history of their history. The school has a population of 300 students and the first group which were to sit for KCSE exams this year 2019, had a mean score of 67 points which is better for a start.

We had a good interactive session with the girls covering a variety of in education and talents, menstrual hygiene, unit selection and empowerment, FGM and teenage pregnancies.

One of the challenges we discovered was that they were less informed when it came to the use of contraceptives. The girls also talked about the high rate of school dropouts due to early pregnancy amongst the teens., after having a good time, we left them with some goodies.

In the afternoon, we visited Sekenani Girls Secondary where we joined Influencers Abroad. The school whose population is 285 girls also face the same issues at Talek Girls Secondary.

Being the World Environment Day, we celebrated the occasion by planting some trees at the school compound and also gave some goodies.

All this was made possible, due to the great team comprised of Influencers Abroad, EmbraceHers Team, Oloiren Safaris and Maafleva Entertainment.
